Do You Get Speechless?

Anthea Moffat - Thursday, February 25, 2010

The mere thought of having to deliver a speech or presentation to a group is enough for most of us to feel sick to our stomach. Mark Twain once said “There are 2 types of speaker – those that are nervous and those that are lying.” But there are so many financial and emotional benefits to conquering this fear. In fact if you are in business I would suggest that being able to design and deliver “wow” presentations is one of the most useful skills you can master.

My 5 top public speaking tips…

1)     Know your outcome
Be clear about the message you want to convey, the lessons you want share and the action you want your audience to take.

2)     Structure your message
Always start your presentation with the reasons “why” the audience needs to listen to you and “why” what you are going to share with them is important to them.

3)     Use visuals
85% of the information taken into the brain enters through the eyes. To ensure your audience doesn’t “zone – out” you need to have a visual element to your presentation.

4)     Teach them something new
Use interesting facts and statistics. Your aim is to get your audience to say “wow, I didn’t know that.”

5)     Practice, practice, practice
It’s the same advice I would give to anyone learning a new skill. However what is very important is that you practice your presentation out loud so that you can get used to hearing yourself.

These ideas are simple but believe me when I tell you that they will make a huge difference to your presentations. If you want to really master your speaking skills then join me on our 2-day hands-on Speaker Mastery workshop taking place on the 9th and 10th March 2010.
